Global Crypto News

Indigenous Systems: Nigeria is planning to develop its own blockchain, according to the country's National Information and Technology Development Agency (NITDA). Tentatively named 'Nigerium', the state-implemented blockchain is expected to address data security and transparency while reducing dependency on foreign entities. Nigeria has taken a pro-crypto stance since last May, when it solidified its national blockchain policy to foster a robust digital economy.

Tic TAC Toe: Polygon Labs and TAC (The TON Application Chain) have entered into a partnership to bring EVM capabilities to the TON ecosystem. The implementation of EVM-compatible dApps will allow builders to easily port DeFi, gaming, and other projects to TAC. TAC is an L2 built on top of the Telegram Open Network.

TG/ACC: Popular Telegram game Notcoin, DeFi platform 1 Inch, and on-chain attestation protocol Sign, have co-launched a new accelerator program named Triangle. The program is aimed at supporting devs building on Telegram and The Open Network (TON), Telegram's L1 blockchain. Triangle is accepting applicants for a six-week mentorship program from now until August 10th.

Shared Risk: The websites for two DeFi protocols (Compound and interoperability protocol Celer Network) have been compromised, with visitors being redirected to a drainer link. DeFiLlama's pseudonymus founder 0xngmi compiled a list of potentially affected web3-related domains, as the two hacked protocols shared the same registrar.

A Matter of Opinion

There has been a noticeable rise of attacks across the world, where cryptocurrency investors are specifically targeted for their assets. A recent abduction of a three-year-old boy in Hong Kong raised alarms in Asia but crimes in Europe and the Americas have also increased as of late. As the value and popularity of cryptocurrencies surge, so too does the threat landscape, with criminals increasingly targeting crypto owners for ransom or theft.

Just last month, a U.S. court convicted home invasion robbery leader Remy St. Felix of operating robbery "crews" that targeted cryptocurrency owners. These home invasions involved violent assault as well as robbery in the form of cryptocurrency transfers. Kidnapping and extortion has also seen a rise all around the globe, with some victims ending up dead.

While many people may falsely assume safety because their cryptocurrency holdings are in custory of an exchange or a hardware wallet, it is important to remember physical safety as well as crypto scams and drainers. CT reports of assault and targeted robbery at EthCC Brussels (even Pudgy Penguins CEO Luca Netz was not immune) serves as the most recent cautionary tale for all crypto enthusiasts to maintain a low profile and protect their personal information.
